How to measure your lamp shade?

How to measure your lamp shade?
We, at Lamp Shade Solution will show you the best and easiest way to measure a Lamp Shade. We will help you to find the perfect solution for your room and guarantee you will be thrilled with your purchase.
Measuring the lampshade takes little time and effort.
With measuring tape in hand, here is how to measure your lampshades:

Across the top.Across the bottom.Across the side.

Keep Top x Bottom x Slant as the formula that you use in the future. If you know that your lamp base requires a certain size of the lampshade, you can record the information in your phone or a small notebook for reference purposes. That way you won’t make the mistake of buying the wrong lampshade that you have to return or exchange.
A fourth dimension along with Top, Bottom, and Slant is to measure the height from top to bottom using a straight line. It may determine the type of shade that works best. As a rule of thumb, the diameter of the bottom of the shade matters most because it should be greater than the lamp body height.

What’s the Right Size for Your Lamp Base?

When buying a new lamp for your beautiful home, there are many considerations to make. In addition to style, color, and lampshade, you also must think about how it will fit inside a room. Scale is very important because it helps create depth and dimension in a space. The size of the lamp base that you buy should match the other décor you have in a room so that it blends in rather than standing out tackily. Lamps are practical, beautiful, and tasteful when placed in a space with deliberation. Knowing how they will look once brought into the home can be a challenge that is easily overcome with practice. Learning how to properly measure a lamp base is a skill that benefits you by beautifying your home.

Here is how you determine if a lamp base is the right size for a room.

Take a table-to-eye measurement.
While sitting in a chair or on your sofa, measure the distance between the surface of the table and your eye level. You’ll want the lamp that you buy not to exceed the table-to-eye measurement that you’ve come up with. If you’re measuring the distance between a bedside table, the length should be based on your eye level while in a sitting position on your mattress.
If you want this measurement to be precise, you can ask another person to hold the other end of the measuring tape. Hold it to the side of your eye and have someone else pull it out to where the table is. Make sure to record the measurement right away and put it as a memo on your phone for easy reference.

Consider the shade length as the total length of the lamp.
The length of the shade should also be considered because it makes up the entire piece. It should be considered 65 to 80 percent of the length of the base. This allows you to get an idea of how tall the entire piece is from top to bottom as well as how it will look among other items inside the room.

Additional tips that make buying the right lamp base easier.
A measuring tape ensures that you get the most accurate measurements for your lamp base and lampshade. You’ll get a better idea of how the lamp will work in the room you’re placing it in. If you have tall statues or figurines, you’ll want to stagger them throughout the space to create visual interest.
You can intersperse objects in varying heights to keep a person’s eyes moving around the room easily. You’ll find that you can create an exciting environment for people to be in by using color, shape, texture, pattern, and size to add to your theme and provide a visual narrative for a room.

Scale adds to the aesthetic of a space and shapes the visual narrative of a room.
The right size lamp base complements your current décor. It neither overwhelms or underwhelms the other furnishings inside a room. It adds to the general aesthetic in a pleasant way. Lamps are arguably functional and fashionable if you carefully select them with scale in mind.

What is the difference between the sewn appearance (fabric lined/softback) shade versus laminate (hard backed) shade?

After selecting the fabric, shape and size of your shade, the other choice is the lining of the shade. A sewn appearance usually means that the shade is lined with fabric. These shades are often made from a full metal frame with the fabric sewn onto the frame for a true custom shade, or glued on the frame in ready-made shades. These shades often are used in more traditional interior designs, with traditional pleating. Laminate shades are hard-backed shades are held together by a plastic lining. For custom shades, laminate shades can still be customized to include pleats or other specifications. For exterior pleated lampshades, it is unusual to find custom or unique looking laminate shades. These shades are often used for more contemporary designs.

For more information, click here.

Is the string shade translucent?
Yes, the string shade is translucent because the lining is made of linen and it will illuminate your room with a beautiful light. String lampshades have a soft light and look great with glass or crystal lamps.

What is Anna? Is the shade material?
Yes, it is a material of the shades. Anna is not quite as fine as real silk. It is a Synthetic version of the Pongee Silk.

What is the difference between the beige and cream colors?
BEIGE COLOR is a darker color, the color of khaki, taupe and tan with tons of red and brown. This is not cream or off white, it's a light brown tone. CREAM COLOR is a lighter color, the color of pearls, ivory with tons of yellow and eggshell. This tone is warmer and richer than white and off-white.

What is the difference between pongee silk and the other materials?
Silk is the fabric of luxury. For thousands of years, silk has been a coveted export, bringing a sense of elegance and sophistication to everything from scarves to curtains. On a lampshade, silk tends to create an air of romance and opulence — the smooth fabric reflects light and can create an iridescent effect.

Pongee — Originating in the forests of Asia, pongee silk is crisp, sturdy and has no noticeable slubs. The thin, tight weave of the fabric has made it a favorite for centuries, and clothing makers first used it to line kimonos in ancient China.
When to use: Choose a silk lampshade for rooms where the fabric's romance, luxuriousness, and elegance will be a perfect fit.

Other lampshades materials are available in more than only the fabric choices above.

  • Burlap: is a trendy fabric for lampshades. If you choose a burlap lampshade for your home, try pairing it with a farmhouse or rustic-themed room for a charming, pastoral look.
  • Synthetics: While authentic silk comes from the cocoons of silkworms, synthetic fabric is man-made. A manufactured fusion of various fibers, synthetic materials are typically durable and often more affordable than some silks.
  • Linens: Derived from the flax plant, linen has been a prized fabric for centuries, found everywhere from ancient Egypt to household dishcloths. It is also one of the best fabrics for a lampshade. Linen is two to three times stronger than cotton fabric. Porous and lightweight, linen easily wicks away both heat and moisture, and it is a naturally antibacterial material.
  • Cotton: Known for its versatility and durability, cotton fabric is one of the most commonly used materials around the world. Cotton is a popular lampshade fabric that is easy to clean, and it drapes and gathers well, lending itself to pleated and decorative lampshades.

How to clean a water stain off a light gray shade?
It's easier than you think! You will need a dish detergent (clear one), warm water, white vinegar, toothbrush, clean rag or sponge, empty spray bottle. As soon as you remove the shade from the lamp, you will add a small amount of laundry detergent to form a sudsy solution to your spray bottle and for the remaining room you will fill with warm water. (it can be used a small travel spray bottle). Spray the entire shade to keep a wet edge to avoid new water marks from forming. Once the shade is wet, use the toothbrush to scrub the area of the water stain, then use the sponge or rag to gently wash the fabric working your way around the entire shade. After that, you will empty and rinse the spray bottle with water, then add a small amount of white vinegar to your spray bottle and fill the remaining room with warm water again. Spray the entire shade and use the rag or sponge to gently wash the fabric, this will help to eliminate any dust or dirt and will keep new water stains from forming. Pat with a thick towel to remove excess water and if you want better results, hit it with a little warm burst from hair dryer that will help to prevent marks from drips or uneven moisture. Allow to air dry in a warm or sunny location.

What type of color 'oyster' is? Is it a type of grey? Is it a type of white?
Oyster Color is usually described as a silvery white, a yellow-toned pale gray, or an iridescent light gray. Subtle and refined, this upscale neutral shade can have an enormous impact on the mood of a room. The best part of using oyster color for your decor items is they work equally well with a variety of colors from vibrant bright shades to muted neutral tones. Off White Color is a white mixed with a small amount of gray, yellow, or other light color. Natural White Color is a lighter color, a minimalist approach to elegance and glamour. This tone is warmer and richer than white and off-white.

What does the term “washer”mean?

The term “washer” in lampshades, a washer fitter (also know as a Spider) is the most common fitter. Most large shades have washer fitters. So what is a “lampshade fitter”? Look into the top of your lampshade. See the metal framework? It usually looks like a cross with a circle of metal inside called a washer. This is the fitter. It is how the lampshade is “fitted” onto your lamp. The specific type of fitter is important to know when you are shopping for a replacement shade. Here is a little chart showing all the types of fitters found in lampshades. If your lamp has a harp, then you will need a washer fitter. The harp consists of 2 metal posts (known as a HARP) connected to the base of the light socket. These posts run next to the bulb up through the washer fitter atop the bulb and is fastened by a finial which screws on to the top. Some washers are slotted, which means they have a cut-out slot which slips over the electrical cord of your lamp. To measure the attachment drop on a washer attachment fitter: turn the lamp shade upside down on a table top. Measure the distance straight up and down from the table top to the center of the washer fitter hardware.

What is a no hug attachment mean?

A "no hug attachment" lampshade refers to a type of lampshade that does not require a "hugger" attachment or a finial to be secured onto the lamp base. Traditional lampshades often have a metal frame that sits directly on the lamp base and is secured with a finial, which is a decorative piece that screws onto the lamp base to hold the shade in place.

In contrast, a no hug attachment lampshade typically features a different mechanism for attachment. It may have a built-in attachment system, such as a slip-on or clip-on design, that allows the shade to be easily and securely attached to the lamp base without the need for a finial or additional hardware. This type of attachment provides a streamlined and modern look, as well as convenience when it comes to installation or changing lampshades.

Please note that the specific attachment mechanism may vary depending on the manufacturer and design of the lampshade. It's always a good idea to check the product description or contact the manufacturer directly for more information on how the no hug attachment system works for a particular lampshade.
