The primary difference between porcelain and traditional ceramic lies in the composition of the clay used. Porcelain is made from a blend of fine-particle clay and other materials like feldspar and silica, which are fired at extremely high temperatures. The result is a dense, durable, and beautifully crafted lamp that exudes elegance and sophistication.
Ceramic lamps, on the other hand, encompass a broader category that includes various types of fired clay products. Unlike porcelain, ceramic lamps can be made from different clay compositions, ranging from earthenware to stoneware and terracotta. These lamps are generally less translucent and often exhibit a more rustic or artistic appeal. Ceramic lamps offer versatility in terms of design, allowing for a wide range of styles, colors, and finishes.
When it comes to quality, porcelain lamps take the lead due to their superior craftsmanship and refined composition. The precise mixture of materials used in porcelain production contributes to its durability and resistance to chipping or cracking. Porcelain lamps are carefully glazed and meticulously finished, resulting in a luxurious and long-lasting lighting fixture that adds an element of sophistication to any space.
Both porcelain and ceramic lamps are renowned for their durability. However, porcelain lamps have an edge in terms of long-term resilience. The high firing temperatures used in their production create a dense structure that withstands the test of time. Ceramic lamps, while sturdy, may be more prone to chipping or fading over extended periods. It is important to consider the intended use and placement of the lamp when evaluating its durability.
The style options for both porcelain and ceramic lamps are vast, allowing you to find the perfect match for your interior design preferences. Porcelain lamps often exhibit classic and refined designs, making them ideal for elegant and traditional settings. On the other hand, ceramic lamps offer a wider variety of styles, ranging from contemporary and abstract designs to rustic or handmade aesthetics. These lamps can be bold, colorful, or even textured, making them versatile statement pieces that can elevate the visual appeal of any room.
When it comes to maintenance, both porcelain and ceramic lamps require similar care. Regular dusting and occasional cleaning with a soft, damp cloth are usually sufficient to keep them looking their best. It's important to avoid using abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that may damage the delicate finish of porcelain lamps. Additionally, be cautious with ceramic lamps, as certain finishes or glazes may be more sensitive to cleaning agents.
In summary, while porcelain and ceramic lamps share similarities, they possess distinct qualities that make each unique. Porcelain lamps offer unparalleled quality, durability, and a refined aesthetic, ideal for those seeking an elegant lighting solution. Ceramic lamps, on the other hand, provide a broader range of styles, colors, and textures, allowing for more personalized and artistic expressions. By understanding the differences between porcelain and ceramic lamps, you can make an informed decision and select a lighting fixture that not only illuminates your space but also enhances its overall ambiance and style.

In contrast to conventional incandescent bulbs, LED bulbs consume less energy and offer a longer lifespan, thereby reducing the amount of waste generated by frequent replacement of bulbs. In addition, traditional fluorescent bulbs, despite being energy-efficient, have a shorter lifespan than LED bulbs and pose a threat to the environment due to the presence of Mercury waste when discarded. LED bulbs also have a lower heat emission rate, reducing the need for air conditioning, thus resulting in further energy savings. Opting for LED bulbs can help consumers reduce their energy expenses and contribute towards reducing their carbon footprint.
Our lamps are also designed with sustainability in mind. We use materials such as bamboo, recycled glass, and reclaimed wood in our lamp designs, reducing our reliance on non-renewable resources. We also offer lampshades made from sustainable silk fabric and faux silk vegan. Silk is a natural fiber that is renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable. By using sustainable silk fabric, we reduce our impact on the environment and promote responsible sourcing practices. Faux silk vegan, made from synthetic fibers, is a sustainable alternative to traditional silk that mimics its appearance and texture without harming animals.
By choosing LED light bulbs and lamps made from sustainable materials, customers can make a positive impact on the environment. By making small changes in our daily lives, we can collectively reduce our carbon footprint and work towards a more sustainable future. At our lighting business, we are committed to promoting sustainable practices and offering eco-friendly products that are both beautiful and functional.
This Earth Day, let's take a moment to reflect on the impact we have on the environment and the steps we can take to reduce it. By choosing sustainable lighting options, we can do our part to protect the planet and create a brighter future for all.

Start with the right materials
When it comes to cleaning a lampshade, you'll need to gather a few supplies before getting started. You'll need a lampshade, a soft cloth, a feather duster, and a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment.
Start by giving the shade a good dusting with either a feather duster or a soft cloth. If the shade is particularly dusty, you may want to vacuum it with the brush attachment. Just be careful not to get too close to the fabric with the vacuum nozzle.
Next, wet a soft cloth and wring it out so that it's damp but not dripping. Gently wipe down the shade, taking care not to saturate the fabric. Once you're finished, allow the shade to air dry completely before putting it back on the lamp base.
Remove the lampshade from the base
To remove the lampshade from the base, first unscrew the light bulb and unplug the lamp. Next, unscrew the harp (the metal rod connecting the shade to the base). Finally, gently lift the shade off of the base. Be careful not to damage or bend the shade as you remove it.
Dust it off
To dust a lampshade, you will need a feather duster and a soft cloth. First, use the feather duster to remove any loose dust from the shade. If there are any areas with stubborn dirt, use the soft cloth to wipe it away. Be sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies so that the shade is completely clean.
Give it a good wash
To give your lampshade a good wash, you will need a mild soap and a soft cloth. First, mix the soap with some water to create a gentle cleaning solution. Next, use the soft cloth to wipe down the shade, taking care not to damage it in the process. Be sure to clean all of the nooks and crannies so that the shade is completely clean. Once you're finished, rinse the shade with clean water and allow it to air dry completely before putting it back on the lamp base.
Put it back together
Putting the lampshade back on the base is a simple process, but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, make sure that the harp (the metal rod connecting the shade to the base) is in place and screwed in tightly. Next, align the shade with the base so that it is level and centered. Finally, screw in the light bulb and plug in the lamp.
If any decorations were removed from the shade during the cleaning process, such as finials or tassels, they can be re-attached now. Simply screw them back into place or tie them onto the shade. Be sure not to over-tighten any screws or bolts, as this could damage the shade.

]]>Whether in the living room or bedroom - light plays an important role in your well-being.
A warm, diffuse light creates a pleasant atmosphere, which you can achieve with one ceiling light (or several, depending on the size of the room). If you use dimmable lights, you have more options: Dress up? Make it bright! Going to bed? Turn the lights down.
You need a good bedside lamp for reading in bed, because reading in dim light spoils your eyes. Pinpoint, downward light from a lamp with an adjustable arm is best if you don't want to disturb the person next to you with too much basic brightness.
There is always something going on in the children's room, too. In addition to the right furniture, the right lighting in the children's room also plays a decisive role. In any case, the room should have a certain basic brightness. Dimmable ceiling spots illuminate the children's room evenly. A warm, glare-free light is just right. For crafts or homework, spot lighting is important. Thus, especially the light for working should be nice and bright to be easy on the eyes and promote concentration. With swiveling and rotating desk lamps, the light cone can be individually aligned. Important: Make sure that the surrounding area is bright to provide additional eye relief. You can use wall lamps or floor lamps to illuminate the space around the desk in a wonderfully discreet way.
Tip: To ensure that the lamp does not cast shadows during work, the correct orientation of the lamp is crucial. If your child is right-handed, the light should come from the left, and vice versa.
Therefore, it is also advisable to place the desk to the side of the window so that - especially in the sunny months - daylight can be used for work. For reading before going to bed, bedside lamps are, of course, just right, as they are not too glaring and provide pinpoint light. In addition, wall lamps at the head of the bed are worth considering, as are nightlights - they are a wonderfully gentle companion for falling asleep, take away children's fear of the dark and offer orientation.
In addition to the right desk and the right office chair, optimal lighting at the workplace is crucial for healthy work. Because this has an enormous impact on our health and performance, as good light is not only easy on the eyes, but also promotes our motivation and concentration.
The right table lamp can be of particular importance here and have a great influence on concentration.
What table lamps are currently in vogue?
Lamps in typical Scandinavian style are currently in vogue: light wood in noble design. The Danish furnishing trend "Hygge" has long since arrived. This means more time for coziness and for lamps that provide warmth and comfort.
Extravagant and ostentatious, at the same time pure and minimalist - rarely have lamp trends been so diverse. It is above all the contrasts that are making interior fans cheer this season. The colors will also be exciting: elegant gray, unagitated beige and lots of wood will set the tone for the coming months.
We offer an extensive range of lamp & shades, to suit a wide variety of interior themes and spaces. From offices to living rooms, kitchens or hallways, we can help you find the perfect table lamp for your space. Unsure of which lamp shade design is right for you? Contact us today.

Science shows that increased exposure to light is vital to mental and emotional health. If your home is need of a little better lighting, it may be time to add a bedroom lamp.
Finding the perfect lamp shade to create the perfect ambiance and tone in your room can be tricky. Fortunately, we've put together a guide on how to choose the perfect lamp shade for your bedroom.
Interested in learning more? Then keep reading for the best lamp shades, guaranteed to complement any bedroom space.
Before you pull out your wallet and purchase the "coolest" lamp shade you see, consider the space your lamp will inhabit. If your lamp is sitting atop a narrow bedside table right against the wall, you won't have the space necessary for a wide lamp shade.
Take a look at the room and your lighting needs. How much space do you need to illuminate?
Once you have an idea of how wide a circumference your lamp should cast light upon, you can decide on what shape and size your lamp shade should be. Do you need:
You may even need to whip out the measuring tape and see how much space you have available before choosing a lamp shade.
This brings us to measurements. It may never have occurred to you that you should take a look at the dimensions of your lamp and potential lamp shades.
However, if you want the perfect fit, measure the precise height and width of your lamp base so you can fit those measurements to the right lamp shade.
If you already have a lamp base, and it's on the longer end, you most likely want a larger lamp shade. Adding a tiny shade to a huge base throws off the balance of the aesthetic and may leave your room feeling like it lacks the proper feng shui.
A good rule of thumb when choosing lamp shades is to select one that's about two-thirds the height of the lamp base.
As for the lamp shade's width, choose one that is about twice the width of the lamp's base. This will ensure your lamp looks balanced.
Typically, white lamp shades let the most light through. They are the best color for spaces that need more illumination.
White lamp shades outshine (literally), black lamp shades, or those of a darker color. Still, colored shades can add a charm or contribute to the "feel" you're going for.
For example, maroon or dark red lamp shades are often used in restaurants as they create a cozy, familiar ambiance. Green lamp shades are also commonly used for more muted light in places like studies or libraries.
A colorful lamp shade can also add a pop of brightness and interest to your room.
Just be sure that if the main purpose of your lamp is functionality, you don't select a shade that's too dark or covered with patterns. This will prevent sufficient light from penetrating it.
Bedside lamps are most often used for reading. With this in mind, choose a lamp shade that hits about eye level with you when you're sitting up in bed.
You don't want a lamp shade that's too short or too low to allow the light to reach your eyes. You also don't want to choose a lamp shade that will be at a height where you'll be blinded.
Another aspect of functionality to consider is the lamp's movement. If you need to be able to adjust the lamp and direct the light in different ways, choose a lamp shade that's mobile.
Don't purchase a lamp shade that will be easily damaged if you move frequently or tend to adjust it often. Light, cheap lamp shades do not hold up well during moves, so be careful when making your selection.
Lamps are often the first thing people notice when they enter a room. After all, they are bright... Because of this, your lamp will make a statement about your room.
That statement may be bold and interesting, or it may be subtle and purely functional. Regardless of why you have a lamp in your space, choose a style that will make you happy.
After you've considered the functionality, measurements, and color needs of your lamp shade, have some fun with style selection. Most of the time, the striking aspect of a lamp isn't the shade--it's the lamp base.
So, if you have chosen a unique base--say one made of petrified wood--you probably want to choose a more understated shade. This will keep your lamp from looking like it's trying too hard. It will help give emphasis where you want it, on that awesome wood stand.
You can match your lamp shade to a themed base or definite motif.
For example, if your base is shaped like ocean coral, get a lamp shade made with raffia rope to add to the nautical theme. Lamp shades don't just have to be basic silk or plastic, they too can make a statement.
Did you know that lamp shades come in a variety of shapes? We're talking more than your basic rectangular and circular shades...
When choosing the perfect lamp shade, you can choose from a variety of shapes:
The shape of your lamp shade will alter the style of your room. Select a shape that lends itself well to the style of your room. Don't pair a bell shade with an industrial-styled room.
Your bedroom should be a place of comfort. A place where you feel most at home and most yourself.
The light in your bedroom will be important to creating a space where your needs are met and your tastes satisfied. For ideas on what lamp shades are available to create your perfect space, browse our lamp shades collections or contact us at inquiry@lampshadesolution.com.

Not too bright, not too dark - What you should also pay attention to when buying is the light color. For concentrated work, a neutral white light around 4,000 Kelvin is recommended. For general and accent lighting, it may be warmer light colors around 3,000 Kelvin. In general, cool light has a stimulating and activating effect, while warm light has a relaxing and calming effect. Accordingly, at work, where we want to concentrate and stay awake, we need a bright and cool light. For an office workplace, you therefore need at least a 500-lux lamp.
Light has a great influence on our body and our state of mind. Even our biorhythm is determined by light. In the morning, cool light shows up in nature and has a stimulating and activating effect on our body. Makes sense - we want to be active throughout the day. Daylight has an average of about 5,000 Kelvin. This light temperature is also recommended for offices. In the evening, the light is warm and lets us relax. This also makes sense - we are supposed to come to rest and then sleep.
Before you start thinking about the right desk lamp, look at the position of your desk. Is it possibly placed directly in front of the window - as seen in many furnishing magazines? Or do you sit with your back to the window? In both cases, the lighting conditions are suboptimal. Your eyes are strained because the incoming sunlight dazzles you or shines directly into your screen and creates reflections. Headaches or signs of fatigue can be the result. Ideally, your desk should be at a 90-degree angle to the window. That way, daylight falls on your workstation without blinding you. If you're lucky, you'll have a view worth taking in - letting your eyes wander off into the distance every now and then relaxes your eyes and mind. Your desk lamp should be mounted to the side and above head height to avoid looking directly into the light and creating distracting shadows. If the desk offers too little space, you can alternatively mount a clamp lamp (e.g., on the shelf). It is best to choose a luminaire with a swiveling arm that can be precisely aligned as needed.
Click here to find your perfect desk lamp:
The desk is brightly lit, nothing stands in the way of the home office. Don't make the popular "island solution" mistake by neglecting the overall space. Desk luminaires provide bright working light - additional lighting in the form of a ceiling or pendant luminaire ensures basic illumination and balances out the light-dark contrast. This means that the eye must adapt less and is relieved accordingly. Glare-free lighting is also the top priority here. Choose luminaires with special diffusers that minimize glare.
These can be table lamps on sideboards or windowsills, floor lamps or a pendant light with modern LED lamps in retro look. These light accents are perceived by us as very pleasant and contribute to the fact that we feel comfortable in our four walls. Let your creativity run wild and combine, for example, the fancy pendant sets with stylish LED filaments from Bailey.
For creativity, cooperation and communication, subdued and warm light is helpful, but for concentration, fine motor skills or learning activities, bright and cool light is helpful. A lamp with 5,000 Kelvin and 500 lux is suitable for office activities. We recommend using a dimmable daylight lamp to adapt it to different activities.

]]>In 2022, lighting trends are more brilliant than ever, with something for everyone and every room, from eye-catching chandeliers to subtle lamps and bulbs that gently wrap a room in light. Lighting trends are the ace up the interior design world's sleeve, and they play an important role in decorating and beautifying an interior space. If you light a room with a single - bare - bulb, it will look cold and without atmosphere.
It’s time for a little renovation and refreshing - a look at the home trends for 2022 is a must!
Surprising combinations
It is the perfect contrast between tradition and modernity, giving an extra touch to classics. Combining an old design with a new one: timeless silhouettes combined with modern finishes and materials. Some styles, which can be different, harmonize when combined and create a new feeling of living.
Linear style lighting
Long lines and silhouettes create a simplified look and replace complicated designs in the new year. This look provides a fresh change of scenery and variety in your home that many crave. Whether it's playful crohn chandeliers, bolder versions or pendant lights: The different designs will complete your space thanks to the seamless look.
Soft lighting
Eye-catching fixtures are just as on-trend as soft, low-key ones that blend into a room and make it feel brighter and warmer. This lighting creates a different atmosphere and a warm home feeling that brings spring into your living spaces. Enjoy spring all year around.
Natural and raw textures
A room can reflect nature with the help of natural textures as a restful place and realize the living space into an oasis of tranquility. Lighting this year will handle the concept. Organic, rattan, wooden materials and natural textures are a trend that gives the room a warm, slightly summery atmosphere. Products with traces of craftsmanship look more lifelike, embody the qualities of "soul and warmth" and look creative. Products that can reflect this feeling are rattan lighting and bamboo lighting. These light sources can be integrated and incorporated into any space.
Multi-layered light sources
Instead of settling for one light source, 2022 will be about reviving the look of layered lighting. In large spaces like the living room, where lamps and overhead fixtures play an important role in various situations, this is the optimal solution for a natural light display. This can include recessed lighting, art lighting, wall sconces and accent lamps in all colors. By installing dimmers, separate controls for each light source and incorporating smart homes, a variety of moods can be created.
Floor lamps, wall lights, table, and desk luminaires - these are just a few of the world of options available when mapping out a grande new lighting design scheme. Metallic and marble floor lamps, handmade pendant lights, space-age table lamps and architectural chandeliers are the incoming styles of spring trends in 2022. It is time to re-create an endless spring style in your home and create a warm atmosphere all year along!

To choose the right summer fabric, it is important to know the different types of lamp shades. Aligning your fabric choice to the lampshade style creates a cohesive and stylish look that will fit in well with your summer decor. Here are some popular types of lampshades you can choose from:
The main lamp shade styles are traditional, contemporary, and transitional. This variation allows you to choose the right look for your space or dream design. Each style could work well with your summer decor and design ideas.
For example, a traditional shade in a fun summer fabric like seersucker or whimsical floral print could add personality and brightness to any room. Most of these lamp shade styles come in traditional sizing which ranges from 4 inches to 24 inches.

Chic Linen
Is there a summer fabric more quintessential than linen? Linen is the ultimate chic and refreshing look. The fabric manages to look luxurious and high quality yet relaxed at the same time.
This makes it the ideal summer shade choice for your lamps. There are many different weights and types of linen fabric to choose from.
Choose Your Texture
Perhaps the most common and versatile fabric is simple or fine linen. You may have noticed this material used in napkins, tablecloths, or even curtains. Fine linen tends to have a flat weave that is plain and delicate to the touch.
Oppositely, some linens like the flax materials have a thicker or more coarse weave. This linen tends to feel rougher to the touch and creates a relaxed or bohemian vibe in decorating schemes. Either linen would work wonderfully with summer shades because of the inherently cool and crisp-looking qualities.
A Unique Take
When you think of linen, what comes to mind? Maybe the colors white, cream, or grey.
And while those shades work perfectly for summer decor, linen also allows for more diverse design opportunities. For example, this bold handmade linen drum shade is a gorgeous way to welcome summer.
Luxurious Silk
You may think of silk as an uber luxurious, formal, and heavy fabric. But, today, silk can feel fresh, modern, and utterly versatile. Silk lampshades are a design-forward way to make an impact on your summer home decor.
A gorgeous silk shade can make a basic or old lamp base look luxurious and brand new. How can you bring silk into summer mode? Go for light and gentle colors like sky blue, mint green, or peachy pink.
Elemental Design
These shades embrace the natural lightness of summer and can help to bring outdoor elements like sea or sky into your home. For example, a pleated silk shade in sand or brilliant white feels fresh and current for summertime. Or, a gingham pattern is a fun country chic approach that will inspire you to cook a BBQ indoors!
Depending on your budget and home care needs, you can choose a synthetic or real silk shade. Either option brings the lux, shiny element of silk into your home.
Cool Cotton
Cotton is one of the most natural and organic materials on the market. This makes it a safe and quality choice for summer lamp shades. Cotton also offers great design variety and low maintenance benefits.
For example, do you love bright summer colors like blue, yellow, or green? A cotton shade can inject the perfect color dose into your living room, sun porch, or even bedroom. If you have a family or children, don't worry about tacky fingers ruining quality lampshades.
Cotton is one of the easiest materials to wipe clean or remove stains. This makes it a great investment for a hand-made lampshade. You can choose the cotton fabric, pattern, or style you want without sacrificing quality or worrying about maintenance.
It's All in the Touch
Compared to linen, cotton tends to have a more uniform weave that feels flatter and more refined to the touch. If you prefer a one-dimensional-looking fabric that tightly fits your shade, cotton is a great choice.
The Right Shade Fabric Can Brighten Your Summer Decor This Season
Choosing the right shade fabric for summer is an important design decision that can create a big impact you didn't even know you needed. Easily swap out your heavy fabric or dark-colored winter shades for lighter materials like cotton, linen, or silk. These summer shade fabrics allow you to express your creativity through color, style, and pattern.

Go Bold with Black
If you want to create a dramatic impact in a room, black lampshades are an excellent choice. This color shade will bring a bold element to a room, and of course - black also goes with virtually anything.
Black lampshades are perfect for rooms with an industrial theme, and they also look elegant in a bedroom or dining space. Try a rectangular replacement lamp shade with cut corners to add an elegant touch.
A lampshade with cut or angled corners looks best with a small, rectangular lamp base. However, a tall and thin cylindrical base will also go well with this silhouette.
If you're feeling especially bold, consider black and gold lamp shades. This design typically features a black exterior with a shimmering gold finish on the inside. The two-toned look and use of metallics add a modern boost and contemporary edge to any room of your home.

Lamp shades can be made of a variety of materials, depending on your budget and your specific needs. For a gorgeous touch, consider a silk lamp shade crafted of 100% silk for an elegant, high-end component in any room.
Silk is a luxe option that looks gorgeous as a table and floor lamp shade replacement. You can also try replacement glass lamp shades featuring durable glass that diffuses the light. A glass shade is also extremely easy to clean with just a quick dusting.
If you are looking for affordable lamp shades, be on the lookout for synthetic silk. These synthetic lampshades are less expensive than those made of real silk, but they still exude an air of sophistication and luxury without the high price tag.
Other popular material choices besides silk and glass include parchment, linen, and string lamp shades. A string lamp shade is made with thin string either made of silk or synthetic materials. These thin strings are delicately placed over a base to create a beautiful ribbed look.
Construction and Design
Most ready-made lamp shades come in predetermined sizes and shapes. You can look for lampshades online to determine which option will work best with your lighting situation.
If you're aiming for a modern look with clean, crisp lines, consider hardback lamp shades. This option features a rigid structure thanks to the inner lining that keeps the material of the lampshade smooth and crisp so you won't have to worry about the material wrinkling over time.
Another great choice for a modern aesthetic is drum lamp shades. The large, rounded silhouette resembles a drum and gives any lamp base a distinctively mid-century modern look.
For a more classic look, consider bell or empire-shaped shades. This option is more traditional, but it will be easy to pair with practically any style of furniture and decor.

Tips to Help You Find the Perfect Replacement
Whether it's a hardback drum shade, a black shade, or something made of pure silk, finding the perfect replacement can be challenging. Here are a few helpful tips to guide you when looking for your new lamp shade:
If you aren't sure which size lamp shade to purchase, start by thinking about your base. The taller the lamp is, the larger the shade size should be in order to give it the right proportion. Always make sure that you have a minimum of two to three inches between the bulb and the shade.
For table lamps, the ideal shade size should have a bottom diameter of around 16 inches or less. For a floor lamp, the bottom diameter should be a minimum of 16 to 18 inches around.

Many people avoid black lamp shades because they fear they might be too dark or gothic. However, this is a misconception. A black lamp shade can bring new levels of elegance to your home.
]]>
Incorporating black into your rooms can add a flair of drama, without coming across too strong. It's exactly the kind of bold piece that your room needs.
In this article, you'll learn about some of the top reasons why a black lamp shade could be the perfect design choice for your home, so keep reading if you're on the fence about this stunning option!
Black isn't on the color wheel at all. This is because it isn't a color - it's every color together. This is great news for interior designers because black matches every color!
Most contemporary designs focus on natural tones and muted shades like white, grey, and beige. These color palettes can lead to beautiful homes, but sometimes lack the depth to bring them all together.
In these settings, a white lamp shade can make the room feel as if it is lacking definition. A simple black lamp shade can tie the whole room together.
With a lighter palate, black can add a dash of color and drama and create a bit of contrast in the room. Even pairing black and white together makes for a classically elegant combination of colors.
When working with a darker palette, black lamp shades can create a dark, elevated theme. Black with dark blue, burgundy, or even dark brown can make a room feel cool and dramatic.
So, it doesn't matter what color your rooms are, black can match with yellows, greens, reds, and more!
Black has always been a symbol of sleek, classic power in our society. Consider how the black outfits of judges and priests evoke a sense of respect. You can also see this in effect at any fancy event where the men wear black tuxedos and many women opt for a black dress.
In color psychology, black is the color of elegance, sophistication, and confidence. A sleek touch of black evokes those same feelings in your home.
Sometimes black carries with it negative connotations of evil. However, the use of black to represent villains and darkness is not because black is an inherently evil color. It's because black creates a sense of mystery and intrigue, with a flash of drama; perfect for giving an evil character a bit more appeal and depth.
Black can be a polarizing color, but in interior design, its effects are somewhat muted by the rest of the room. Black accents like black lamp shades give just a dash of mystery without overwhelming the room.

It’s simple: do your research by reading this guide.
Here are some tips and factors to consider when choosing a lampshade. Learn more to discover how you can balance affordability and aesthetics.
If you're shopping for great-looking lamp shades online, consider the shape of your lamp. The general rule is that you use your lamp's shape to decide what type of shade you'll get. This is to make the lampshade fit neatly into any room of your home.
Here are the different styles of lamp shades for you to consider. Choose among them to make any room feel more comfortable and stylish.
Empire Lamp Shades
It’s a classic shade with a cone shape. It features a small top diameter with a larger bottom diameter. It’s a safe choice because of its versatility.
It means empire lamp shades will work with most lamp shapes and styles. Regardless of your décor, you’re unlikely to go wrong with this style. It’s what makes it a good choice for beginners.
Bell Lamp Shades
Like Empire lamp shades, bell lamp shades have a cone shape. The difference is that it has curved, sloping sides. It achieves this shape by attaching several panels.
These panels will come together at the seams running through the lampshade. With this, bell lamp shades are great if your home has a more traditional theme. They fit with other traditional décors because of their antique design.
Drum Lamp Shades
Unlike the first two types, drum lamp shades have a cylinder shape. It means both top and bottom diameters are the same. It’s the best choice if your lamp needs a more contemporary flair.
This shade also works when your lamp has a rounded, vase-like silhouette. This variety also works well with a thin, candlestick-shaped body.
Square and Rectangle Lamp Shades
These lamps’ shapes are either pyramid or cube. It’s the perfect choice if you intend to put a lamp on the side or console tables. It manages the space well because it works even with limited spaces.
Make the most out of square or rectangle lamp shades with lamps with prominent angles and lines. You may also use black lamp shades to add a more minimalistic feel to it. This also adds a subtle edge to your room.
Picking the right lampshade is necessary if you aim for a proportional look for your lamp. A general rule is to get one that’s wider than the lamp’s base. It must be an inch or two wider and tall enough to conceal all the hardware on the lamp.
Your choice of lamp shade must have the appropriate fitter for your lamp. You’ll find these inside the lampshade. In most cases, you can either screw it onto the lamp, slip it over the bulb socket, or attach it right to the bulb.
Because of the growing lamp industry, you have more material choices than ever. Never rush on choosing based on the material. It’s an important factor since it adds style and a special lighting effect to your lamp.
The shade material will set the mood of the lighting. It can either make it subtle for a softer mood or bright enough to dominate the room with light. Each material also determines the patterns and colors you can pick.
Here are popular lamp shade materials you must choose from:
Fabric
Some of the most popular fabric options in the market include cotton, linen, and silk. You can choose from a wide array of colors and patterns with fabric lamp shades. It eases the process of choosing a shade that fits your home’s style.
For example, a white pleated lampshade is best for a classic theme. Contemporary homes will look better with livelier patterns. As said above, using black for your lamp gives it a minimalistic yet sophisticated feel.

Glass
This material is the most popular choice for antique lighting. Tiffany-style lamps with colored glass make an ambiance, unlike any other. With their color variety, these lamp shades can make your room dazzling.
If your room’s theme is traditional, glass lamp shades contribute to its vintage feel.
Paper
Lamp shades made from paper are light and thin. They have lots of color options, but the most popular among them is the natural parchment color. You can print or paint unique designs on paper lamp shades to give the room unique lighting.
Some paper lamps make your rooms have a more oriental feel. Other designs contribute to the rustic, homely setting. If you want your room to feel simple and welcoming, paper lamp shades are cheap and effective.
Metal
Are you fond of industrial décor? If so, investing in metal lamp shades is perfect. You can pick various metallic finishes, such as:
Regardless of your desired look, you can coordinate these lamp shades. It’s perfect if you want a modern-looking lamp on your bedside table. It’s because metal lamp shades are opaquer, meaning they won’t be as bright.
The lack of brightness is this lampshade material’s strength. You can use it in your living room if you want a more subdued accent lighting option.

It's most straightforward to start with the similarities of a Euro and a UNO fitter. Both of these lamp shade fittings include a threaded ring, which attaches around the light bulb base - whether that's facing upwards or downwards. If your lampshade is for a ceiling light, the threaded ring and spokes will be situated at the top of the shade; if it's for a table lamp, they will be on the bottom.
Both Euro Fitters and UNO fitters are designed to attach directly to the bulb socket and require no additional parts to attach light to shade.
| UNO Fitters |
Uno lamp shade fitters sit directly inside a specialized light bulb socket, secured by a threaded ring held in place by the light bulb.
UNO fitters are designed to match a specific size of the bulb setting, and so if replacing a shade for a UNO setting, you will likely need to purchase a lampshade with the same type of UNO fitting.
| Euro or European Fitters |
A Euro fitter joins the lamp to the light between two parts surrounding the bulb, held in place by a thin gap that exists between the bulb socket and base.
European Fitters are also known as ES fittings (Edison Screw or European Standard).
Often, when buying lampshades from European retailers (e.g. IKEA), many customers return home to find that their lampshades don't fit their lights. It's an easy mistake to make, choosing a Euro shade in place of a UNO. This mishap results in either ill-fitting or unusable lampshades, so it's always worth checking your light's requirements before purchasing.
Despite their similarities, there are ways to tell these lampshades apart. The easiest way is to measure the inner ring.
European fitters (ES) are 4cm or 1 9/16" in diameter, whereas UNO fitter lampshades have a smaller inner fitting and should measure 3.2cm or 1.25" in diameter.
Lamps imported to the US and lamps purchased from IKEA or Target almost always require European fitters.
The other distinguishing feature of a UNO fitter is the ring itself. UNO fitters are thicker and slightly broader than the standard inner Euro ring. This thicker band fits inside the allocated slot within the light bulb setting.
If you've bought the wrong shade, it's ok! There are ways to convert a Euro shade to match a UNO fitter. It's possible to use a lampshade reducer to bring the diameter of the ring inwards. This type of adapter is useful if you've picked up a shade from a homewares store that unfortunately doesn't fit your home lighting.

]]>But no lamp is complete without its shade. Lampshades, like lamps, exist in endless shapes and styles, from bold geometric designs to traditional bell-shaped curves. However, even our favorite shades grow old — eventually, many of them yellow over time, or the décor of the room may have changed.
When you are choosing a new lampshade, one of the most significant decisions is the material of the new shade. To find the perfect material of shade to fit your lamp and your room, you need to consider many different points, including fabric color, light diffusion, and the surrounding decorations.
The Color Of The Shade
As you select a new lampshade, one of the first decisions you will face is the color of the shade. In many ways, this decision comes from a decorative, rather than a functional, point of view. For example, if you want your shades to be a focal point in your room, you should choose bold colors that will stand out from the rest of the decoration. On the other hand, if you want a subtler approach, try picking a lampshade with neutral tones.
To help you decide what color of shade best fits your lamp, room and existing home décor, consider these three factors — the type and location of the lamp, along with the surrounding furniture.
When you are selecting the right color of fabric for your lampshade, first consider the kind and style of your lamp.
There are three major lamp styles — round, candlestick and square/rectangular. Round bases are a traditional and timeless shape, while square or angular bases have more modest appeal and candlestick bases fall somewhere in between.
To determine the right hue for your new shade, examine the type of lamp underneath. Is it a bottom-heavy, round base? Or is it a classic and streamlined candlestick? Your choice of color will depend on both the style of the lamp base and your décor — do you want your lamp to look striking and trendy, or classic and traditional?
If you have a traditional lamp, pair it with a traditional shade color for a cohesive effect. Neutrals like white and a warm beige go well with virtually any lamp base. To accompany a classic style of lamp, these shades add a gentle sophistication to the base, helping it blend effortlessly into the rest of the décor. A retro or modern color such as dark blue or a rich red goes well with a geometric or angular base, adding unexpected and stylish flair to a room.
Alternately, contrasting the style of the lamp with the color of the lampshade will add dimension and interest to any décor. If your base is in a traditional style, top it off with a deep blue shade (why only this color?). If you have a fun, unique lamp, try pairing it with a neutral-colored shade for a softening effect.
Here are a few general lampshade color recommendations based on the type of lamp base.
As you search for the perfect fabric, experiment with a few different shade colors. Ultimately, the most significant rule in selecting a lampshade is to go along with your sense of style.
The position of the lamp also plays into the color of the shade. Note where you have placed your lamp. What is the current décor of the room? Is it timeless and traditional? Are the walls white and minimalistic, with plenty of greenery spilling out from pots on the floor? Is it a more masculine space, with rich woods and deep colors? Particularly, look at the colors threading through the decoration. Are they primarily light neutrals, or bright pops of pastels?
Also, examine what other lamps and lampshades are in the space. What are the dominant colors and styles of the other lamps? Would replacing one lampshade mean you have to replace all of them?
If you like the current decor in the room, choose a lampshade color that fits the theme. For example, if the room is full of traditional pieces and colors, choose a classic lampshade fabric to match. Light-colored satin and cotton add an understated elegance to a classic décor scheme, while bright, fun lampshades would flow effortlessly in a room brimming with vibrant accent colors and contemporary elements.
To easily upgrade your room's tone and theme, try adding choosing a lampshade hue that matches a subtle accent color.
If your room has a blend of different themes, it can be difficult to choose which one to match with your lampshade. Do you pick a neutral shade to match a traditional sofa, or do you go with a funky color to fit the wall art?
If you are finding it difficult to narrow down your search, examine the furniture immediately surrounding the lamp. Is it next to a cherry wood dresser, a black bookcase or an end table next to an antique chair?
The pieces immediately surrounding the lamp can help you determine the color & fabric of your new lampshade. Light, subtle colors can seamlessly blend with classic furniture or soften dramatic accent pieces. Striking colors such as black or navy might look beautiful on top of a wooden table or next to an abstract or attention-grabbing piece of art.
Amount of Light Diffusion
When you are choosing a replacement lampshade, the second decision to make is the desired lighting effect. Various lampshade shapes and styles have different spreads of light around a room — knowing your desired effect will help narrow your search.
Both the color and the material of the lampshade influence how it diffuses light. Historically, most lampshades have been white or other light neutrals because these colors diffuse the most light. A white shade will be the most effective at spreading light through a room, while colored or dark shades direct light down the base of the lamp. Alternately, dark-colored shades tend to add a touch of drama by creating pools of light in a room.
Lampshade fabrics can be either translucent or opaque. Translucent lampshades allow light to escape through the sides of the shade, diffusing light evenly across a space. Opaque shades are made from materials that prevent light from diffusing from the sides. Instead, light emits from the lamp through the top and bottom of the shade, creating a unique lighting experience.
When you are choosing between translucent and opaque fabric for your lampshade, think about the purpose of the lamp. If it is for reading or to shed ambient light, you should choose a translucent shade. If you're using the lamp only as an accent light and don't need a lot of light in the room, you can use an opaque shade.
While the color of the lampshade comes down to décor and design preference, the lamp's function will determine whether to buy an opaque or translucent fabric.
Types of Lampshade Fabrics
When you choose the material of your shade, you need to consider the look you want for your lamp and your room, as well as the purpose of the lamp. There are four broad categories of lampshade materials: silks, synthetics, linens, and cotton.
Silk is the fabric of luxury. For thousands of years, silk has been a coveted export, bringing a sense of elegance and sophistication to everything from scarves to curtains.
On a lampshade, silk tends to create an air of romance and opulence — the smooth fabric reflects light and can create an iridescent effect. There are many different types of silk fabrics, including the following:
When to use: Choose a silk lampshade for rooms where the fabric's romance, luxuriousness, and elegance will be a perfect fit.
While authentic silk comes from the cocoons of silkworms, synthetic fabric is man-made. It is a manufactured fusion of various fibers.
Two common types of synthetic lampshade material include Anna and Supreme Satin.
When to use: Pick a synthetic lampshade for retro or sophisticated décor themes.
Derived from the flax plant, linen has been a prized fabric for centuries, found everywhere from ancient Egypt to household dishcloths. It is also one of the best fabrics for a lampshade.
Linen is two to three times stronger than cotton fabric. Porous and lightweight, linen easily wicks away both heat and moisture, and it is a naturally antibacterial material.
Other members of the linen family include fine, flax and handkerchief linen.
When to use: Linens carry a charming, simple feel, and are perfect additions to traditional and comfortable rooms such as living rooms or cozy dens.
Known for its versatility and durability, cotton fabric is one of the most commonly used materials around the world.
Cotton is a popular lampshade fabric that is easy to clean, and it drapes and gathers well, lending itself to pleated and decorative lampshades. Cotton fabrics come in an almost endless variety, but one of the best choices for lampshades is soft-touch cotton.
When to use: Cotton lampshades bring a rustic and understated beauty to any décor scheme. Choose a cotton shade for a laid-back living room or bedroom, or a space that tends to accumulate dust — because it is easy to clean, cotton is the perfect choice for locations that tend to get dirty.

Other Lampshade Materials
Lampshades are available in more than only the fabric choices above. There are many other non-flammable and safe materials for lampshades, including unique options such as canvas, stained glass, punched tin and seashells.
Burlap, in particular, is a trendy fabric for lampshades. If you choose a burlap lampshade for your home, try pairing it with a farmhouse or rustic-themed room for a charming, pastoral look.
When determining what fabric to choose, consider the maintenance levels of different materials. While cotton and glass are easy to clean, more delicate fabrics such as silk and satin require extra care and attention.
Some bulbs will make certain fabrics yellow over time. If your lampshade is white, cream or another light neutral, pay attention to the wattage of lightbulb you put in your lamp to keep the lampshade in premier condition.

Black lamp shades direct color down, adding drama and a sophisticated lighting statement to any space. They work best in areas where you want softer — rather than brighter — light. They are also ideal for spaces with more than one light source, so you will also have a sufficient amount of light.
Sometimes, a black lamp shade keeps a room from appearing too airy or bland. Think of an all-white room or a space full of neutral colors. While this look is often fresh and simple, a black or other dark-colored lamp shade can add just the right amount of modern, classic and elegant flair. Black lamp shades are revered for their dramatic yet romantic appearance.

]]>Short and broad in shape, coolie lamp shades took inspiration from straw coolie hats or rice paddy hats worn by Chinese farmworkers. Coolie hats were designed with a very wide and functional brim, to shield farmworkers' faces from the sun while collecting rice from the fields. A design with great symbolism and significance, this recognizable silhouette has stood the test of time and remains in use to this day in Chinese agriculture. It also continues to be one of the most popular lamp shade styles.
The squatter profile of a coolie lamp shade requires consideration when pairing with a table lamp.
We recommend opting for short, spherical table lamp shapes that will mirror a coolie lamp shade's flat and circular form. Overly rectangular or sharply angled bases can contrast rather than complement, creating a juxtaposed look.
We also recommend trying very tall stands such as a buffet lamp base, or candlestick-style lamps. Elevated, slender supports such as these create sophisticated lighting, balancing the slim profile of the shade against the thin frame. For a classic look, we recommend a metal lamp base in a luxe metallic brass or gold finish, or for a traditional Asian theme, why not opt for bamboo or natural-toned wood.
Also tall and narrow in shape, floor lamps can be paired harmoniously with a coolie shade. While some shades angle and deliberately restrict light, coolie shades create ample lighting with a large lower opening. Matched with a floor lamp, coolie lamp shades will cast broad illumination in any room. This makes them an excellent choice for floor lamps, especially placed alongside sofas and seating for sufficient reading light.
Coolie shades are perfect for spaces that require extensive lighting, such as studies or areas around the home for working or reading. A coolie pendant is particularly useful in rooms requiring a lot of illumination, such as hallways, living rooms, and kitchens. An incredibly versatile shape, these conical shades can be easily applied to ceiling lights and suit a variety of interior settings, depending on fabrics and colors used.
For kitchens, enamel, glass, or metal coolie pendants complement a functional space. Pair with a white-toned bulb for clarity.
Consider a light, linen coolie shade for a bright hallway, or luxe cotton or velvet for a more intimate living room.
Coolie shades are contemporary in style, and so work most harmoniously within a modern theme.
It's worth noting that a coolie lamp shade may not be the best choice when styling a small space. Often much fuller in size than others, this type of shade is broader than its counterparts, given the base's wide diameter. For areas with limited room, we recommend choosing a narrower lamp shade style, as a cumbersome coolie shade may encroach into functional areas or hallways where more free space is needed.
Coolie lamp shades are compatible with most light fittings, but before buying your new lamp shade, check your bulb socket. Due to the flatter nature of this design, some light fittings will be too shallow to accommodate a coolie lamp shade. Two or three-cluster light sockets are often too broad to accommodate this lamp shade form, and so we usually recommend a different shape.
Looking for an alternative style? Why not try: Retro Drum Lamp Shades
Similar widths on top and bottom, almost perfectly cylindrical in shape - Euro Lamp Shades
Slightly tapered, with a small difference between upper and lower rims - Empire Lamp Shades
A clean shape with a slightly smaller opening at the top than the bottom, more angled than a Euro shade but still suitable for smaller rooms.
]]>
There are many shapes that will complement different lamp bases better than others. This guide outlines the various types of popular lamp shade shapes that you can find, highlights some of our bestselling lampshades, and describes which will best suit the many lamp bases around your home.
Drum Lamp Shades
Drum lampshades appear perfectly cylindrical in shape. They have similar openings on top and bottom, allowing an even distribution of light to glow above and below. Initially introduced in the 1060s these precisely formed lampshades became an instant hit with interior designers of the era; given that the cylindrical, symmetrical form matched so well with the geometric aesthetic at the time.
Want to know more about our Drum Lamp Shades? Read our blog A Buying Guide: Drum Lamp Shades to discover more.
Our most popular lampshades include a selection of handcrafted drum shades, including our bestselling Deep Drum Pleated Lamp Shade – a beautiful white or off-white-colored shade with detailed trim and rows of intricately folded pleats.
A more contemporary shade, our popular Black Retro Drum Shade is made in hardbacked faux silk with a vibrant gold lining; perfect for creating a more modern look.
Pair with:
- Geometric lamp bases in either form or pattern
- Retro-inspired lamp bases (the 1960s in particular)
Coolie Lamp Shades
A more traditional lampshade, a Coolie shade features a smaller upper diameter and broader lower base. Coolie lampshades are easy to distinguish from their flat, squat shape, with the bottom part of the shade usually around four times as wide as the top opening. Originally designed and created in China, these traditional shades are perfect for adding authenticity to an Oriental-inspired setting.
A long-standing favorite at Lamp Shade Solution, one of our more popular styles is our Black Coolie Hardback Lamp Shade – a clean and modern shade crafted from shiny black parchment with a contemporary reflective gold lining.
For a more traditional look, our Coolie Lamp Shade with Hand Rolled Edge is available in either beige or white offers a classic style for a simpler setting.
Pair with:
- Short, squat lamp bases (to match with the short height of this style)
- Either angular or rounded shape bases
Bell Lamp Shades
Enduring and classic, Bell Lamp Shades provide a traditional look. Their shape is curved and tapered out to form a wider diameter at the base. Given the shapely swooping frame of a Bell Lamp Shade, this style works best with spherical lamp bases, and complement a more traditional interior theme.
Our most popular shades in this form include our Bell Uno Lamp Shade – available in a wide variety of fabrics and colors this shade can be matched to any décor, offering complete versatility. This particular shade features a circular, three-prong UNO light bulb fitter.
A more extravagant style, our Bell with Smocked Pleated Cuff Lamp Shade includes an intricate hand tucked and pleated ‘hem,’ which adds a beautiful finishing touch.
Pair with:
- Traditional lamp base styles in curved shapes
- A base around 2/3 the size of the lampshade
Empire Lamp Shades
An empire lampshade has a clean shape with a slightly smaller opening at the top than the bottom. This style tapers to a narrower diameter at the upper part of the shade, allowing slightly less light to emerge than across the base. With a slightly shaped, gently narrowing form, this simple lamp shade style remains ever-popular, lending its use on both table lamps and ceiling lights.
Our bestselling Black with Gold Lining Empire Lamp Shade is available in a deep black softback fabric with a smooth satin lining, giving it a contemporary feel. Place on table lamps near sofas or seating for a little extra reading light.
Additionally our bestseller Empire Hand Rolled Side Pleated Lamp Shade is handcrafted in a softback construction, with individual pleats around the exterior. Perfect for creating a more traditional look.

Combining contemporary style with a twist, our tapered coolie and empire string lamp shade designs are available in luxe silk string with a soft-backed lining. Combine these shades with geometric bases to emphasize the clean lines.
Coolie String Lamp Shades
Empire String Lamp Shades

Our collection of square string lamp shades feature cut corners for a more angular look or simple four-pointed rectangular shapes for simplicity. All of our string shades are available in monochromatic black or white and created with luxurious real silk string.

Drum lamp shades are a long-term favorite at Lamp Shade Solution and consistently one of our bestselling styles. In this blog, we describe why these lamp shades never go out of style and share our top picks from our catalog.
Range of Choice
Drum lamp shades are now available in an enormous range of sizes, colors, fabrics, and finishes. The choice of drum lamp shades is greater than any other style you can find. This vast choice is a result of significant demand for this lamp shade style – lamp shade producers have recognized this popularity and so over the years have created drum lamp shades in just about every fabric, color, and size. A quick search on the web will show just how many different variations of drum lamp shades there are available (drum lamp shades are also the most searched lamp shade on the internet!).
We stock a varied collection of drum lamp shades within our collection which you can view here.
Floor to Ceiling
From floor to ceiling, drum lamp shades will suit just about any lighting type. Table lamps, floor lights, and ceiling lights can all be paired with a round, drum lamp shade.
Table Lamps: we recommend opting for a geometric style lamp base to complement the shape of a drum lamp shade. Both square bases and round bases suit, in particular exact, symmetrical spherical or square. This will offset the accurate form of the drum lamp shade and give a balanced look. An eye-level lamp shade is a great place to show off lamp shade details – try matching a table lamp with our Regular Drum Pleated Lamp Shade which features rows of decorative surface pleats.
Floor Lamps: drum lamp shades work well with a wide range of floor lamps. You could accessories a vertical lamp with a dramatic shade (using in either bright color, luxe fabric or size) to create a striking focal point in a room. A simple floor lamp can be instantly transformed by pairing with a wide drum lamp shade; choose a solid color for extra impact, such as our Gold Lined Black Retro Drum Lamp Shade.
Ceiling Lights: there aren’t many rules to using a drum lamp shade on a ceiling light (unless you need to keep plenty of room underneath for clearance and so that visitors don’t bang their head!). Wide drum lamp shades can create a striking feature when placed above a dining table or used as a central focal point in a room. Conversely, smaller lamp shades can be just as attention-grabbing and suit vibrant colors or even printed fabrics. Our Hardback Retro Drum Lamp Shade is available in a wide range of fabrics and sizes from 8” to 13” – suitable for any space.
Our drum lamp shade collection also features square drum shades or rectangle drum shades, a variety of colors and a choice of soft backed or hardbacked styles.
Finally, You Might Not Know…
Although drum lamp shades might look perfectly symmetrical to the eye, there is, in fact, a minor difference in-between the top and bottom rims (although it’s impossible to see using the naked eye). This is to balance the overall shape, making the shade appear correctly aligned. The top rim is always slightly smaller - if both edges were made to precisely the same size, then the top would appear marginally wider, as if tapered and broader at the top.
Our exquisite lamp shades will always include a tiny difference in-between the two circumferences so that the drum lamp shade appears perfectly balanced.

Traditional Interior Design
Traditional home design truly stands the test of time. Recognized by influences from the 18th and 19th century, traditional design pieces include ornate flourishes, fluted accents, and elegant details. The design style is inspired by the historical European stately homes and mansions, which featured sumptuous interiors and eclectic style – often rooms were crammed with art, statues, velvet and brocade fabrics, rugs and intricately carved furniture.
Traditional home décor really is an opportunity to embrace maximalism and decorate with lavish and luxe finishes. Think more is more: chandeliers, gold embellishments, glass accents and gilded touches for a stately home-feel.

For lighting, traditionally designed rooms are often illuminated by ambient lighting from a variety of points and include ceiling lights, wall lights or sconces, and table lamps, always decorated with a luxurious lamp shade or ornate chandelier.
Traditional Lamp Shades
Create a traditional interior design theme with our collection of Traditional Lamp Shades. With fluted shapes, pleated fabrics smocked details, and braided edging, our traditionally-inspired lamp shades will complement ornate decorative themes. Available in a variety of different colors, or for a truly authentic traditional interior design style, opt for classic cream or off-white, in a luxurious silk fabric.

Transitional Interior Design
Transitional interior design represents a mix of styles that are considered traditional with modern and contemporary items. This interior design style is a great way to create versatility in your home, plus make use of family heirlooms or vintage pieces by giving them a fresh look, incorporating them into a contemporary theme.
Transitional design can also be used to describe specific pieces of furniture, lighting or home accessories with a design that blends influences from both historical and contemporary themes.
This theme is hugely popular for its wide versatility, with the ability to blend old and new styles harmoniously to create an eclectic home interior theme.

We love the transitional setting pictured above for its clean lines and contemporary white and yellow palette, with a nod to traditional style, including floor-length curtains, parquet floor, round mahogany table, and a dramatic glass chandelier.
Transitional Lamp Shades
Created to complement transitional design themes and embodying influences of both old and new, our selection of Transitional Lamp Shades are the perfect way to accent this design style. Opt for white or black for a modern feel, or creams for a more traditional look.
Our textural String Lamp Shades are ideal for a transitional interior design style, with a subtle, textural effect with rows of intricate string overlaying a classic lamp shade shape.

Drum Black Lamp Shades
Our drum black lamp shades create an ultra-modern feel. Drum lamp shades are a contemporary style with a precise cylindrical form, and when crafted in a solid black color this modern aesthetic is emphasized and this creates a very clean and geometric feel.
Opt between gold and white linings depending on the type of light that you want. We recommend gold linings for rooms in which you would like to create a soft and warm light (bedrooms or living rooms), and white linings in rooms that require clear and bright illumination (study rooms or workspaces).
Black Drum Lamp Shades
Black Bell Lamp Shades
Bell shades are a tapered and more traditional lamp shade design, and when paired with a classic black hue offer a highly sophisticated look. In a bell-shaped design which curves out to spread wider at the base, these shapely conical lampshades create a dramatic focal point whether switched on or off. Our selection of black bell lampshades are both striking and timeless, and work well on a range of lamp base designs and shapes, and suit a variety of home decorative themes.
Black Bell Lamp Shades
Empire Lamp Shades and Coolie Black Lamp Shades
These conical lamp shades are a very recognizable and popular design – narrow at the top of the lamp shade and broader across the bottom. Coolie lamp shades and empire lamp shades are perfect for accessorizing lamps next to your bed, a chair or sofa, desk lamps or ceiling lights, as they allow light to cast wide from the base and create generous illumination. Opt for lamp shades with a good gold or white lining which will reflect bulb light, and create an additional ambient effect.
Black Coolie Lamp Shades
Black coolie and empire lamp shades are a great way to create a clean and transitional appearance in any room. We offer a wide selection of fabric types in our black lamp shades, from synthetic hardback for a crisp look, to silk or rayon for a softer and more traditional feel.
Black Empire Lamp Shades
Black String Lamp Shades
For a unique lighting effect, opt for a contemporary string lamp shade – a design which features rows of thin string woven around a lampshade frame, creating a detailed and striking effect. Our black string lamp shade designs feature a soft backed white lining which is also effective for letting plenty of bright light through, making these lamp shades great for workspaces as well as living rooms or hallways. We offer black string lamp shades in coolie, empire, drum, oval and rectangular designs, to suit any living space or lamp base style.

Here, we list some simple and practical steps you can take when choosing a lamp size, to ensure that your new lamp will match your living room, bedroom, hallway, or home office.
Eye Level Measurement
Firstly, sit in the space where you want your new lamp to be, or position yourself near to where you require the table lamp. Measure the distance between your eye level and the surface on which the table lamp will be placed. This will help to determine where the top, or where light bulb fitting on the lamp should be. You want to ensure that the lamp won’t exceed the measurement you’ve just created, as the lamp will be too high. If you’re selecting a table lamp for a bedside table, make sure you take any measurements from eye level to table level while you are in a sitting position on your mattress.
This is your lamp base measurement and can be used to determine lamp shade height next.
Lamp Shade Height and Total Height
Next, you can consider the height of your lamp shade. As a general rule, lamp shades should be around 1/3 of the total height of the base, plus the shade. You can calculate this quickly by simply taking your base measurement (that you’ve just determined from your eye level to table height) and diving this by 3. This will give you a rough idea of how tall your shade will be. Add the base and the lamp shade measurements together and this will be your total estimated lampshade height.
Creating Scale
Finally, consider the space in which you are going to use your new table lamp. If you have tall statues or figurines, you’ll want to stagger them throughout the space to create visual interest and scale. Scale adds aesthetic quality and shapes the visual narrative of a room, and is one of the most celebrated techniques for interior design when used effectively. You can create your own element of scale in your home by interspersing objects in varying heights, to keep the eye travelling around the space.
Consider Color, Pattern and Texture
Other considerations for successful interior design combine color, shape, texture, pattern, and size to add to your theme and provide a visual narrative for a room. When choosing your lamp base and shade, ensure that the color and texture are harmonious to your existing theme – dark colors or extremely bright colors or patterns can also appear too large and will dominate a room if not matched well.
Lastly check the size and shape of the lamp shade. We also have useful guides on How To Select a Lamp Shade Design and How To Measure A Lamp Shade, which give more information more specific to lamp shade sizing.

Fringing
Fabric trends for interiors have been heavily influenced by seventies nostalgia over the past year, and that retro influence looks set to inspire home decor themes even more in the coming 12 months, with plenty of textural accents - including fringing. This year, fringing is predicted to adorn an abundance of home furniture and accessories, from mirrors to sofas, to lampshades, soft furnishings and more, as a not-so-subtle nod to the era.

Interior design trends are predicting that fringing will be decorating our homes in a myriad of colors – everything from vivid jewel tones to muted pinks and greys. Embrace the home textile trend for fringing with our own Silk String Drum Lamp Shade from our selection of String Lamp Shades.
Velvet
Velvet’s soft and sumptuous texture has captivated home textile trends in 2018 and looks to be a prominent feature for 2019. Gracing upholstered sofas, plush footstools, soft furnishings, wall decorations, and home accessories, this luxurious fabric doesn’t appear to be going anywhere any time soon.
Although a reasonably inexpensive fabric, velvet has a distinctly luxurious look which gives instant glamour to furniture and home accessories. Velvet also holds strong colors beautifully and works particularly well with bold jewel tones, reflecting light on the soft nap of the fabric.
Forecasted hues such as coral and pink will undoubtedly be used prevalently in this brushed material – look out for colorful armchairs, sofas, chaises and soft furnishings crafted in this short pile fabric.
Coral is the New Black
With Pantone’s recently announced color of the year Living Coral, we can expect to find this lively hue splashed generously throughout this year's fabric trends for interiors. A vivacious hue, this color works well on interior fabrics, particularly bed linen, cushions, and curtains. Applicable to a variety of rooms and purposes, from bathroom towels to dining chair seat pads, or knotted throws and rugs, this color is versatile enough to work with either neutral greys and whites, or bold and bright color themes.

Prints: Oriental, Geometric and Botanical
The most popular prints in 2019 will be inspired by natural, leafy greenery, retro patterns, and Eastern embroidery and artistry. Following a wave of popularity in indoor plants, it’s no surprise that botanical themes have crept into our home furnishings, with palm fronds, monstera leaves, and ferns appearing on bed sheets, cushions, and curtains.
Graphic designs influenced by other retro themes have brought in a new trend for vintage geometric forms. With 2019 marking 100 years of Bauhaus, we can also expect to see plenty of this vintage-style art making a mark on the high street. Think primary colors, angular, geometric shapes and balanced composition.

New oriental inspired print themes feature heavily in home textile trends in 2019, with luxe silk fabrics featuring graceful bird prints and intricate patterns, created by a mixture of embroidery and prints. Asian inspired prints feature particularly prominently in embroidered throws and bed linen and decorative plush cushions

Read on to learn more about the various types of silk fabrics that we use in our lampshade collections, in both real silk and synthetic silk.
We source a variety of blends of real silk fabrics – pongee, and shantung. Each silk has its own unique and properties, creating refined and luxurious lampshades. Natural silk can usually be distinguished from faux silk by its natural variations, whether in the weave or ‘slub’ of silk, or small textural blemishes. Natural silk is created from tiny silkworms, extracted from cocoons then spun into fibers, and woven or loomed into pieces of fabric. Sourcing silk this way is a lengthier process, and often results in a more expensive price tag, making 100% real silk a sought-after material.
We love Pongee silk for its lightweight properties and precise nature of the weave, meaning that it often has no noticeable ‘slubs’ (uneven horizontal ridges in the material which add to the character of the silk). Traditionally from China and popularly used in lampshades, pongee silk is an oriental-inspired and distinctive fabric for any lampshade shape. The pongee silk we source for our silk lampshades is 100% real silk.
Shantung silk possesses a polished finish, with a high sheen. Classically used in lampshades, this silk fabric is a common choice for lampshades thanks to its refined and elegant finish. This semi-satin fabric is also easy to dye in a multitude of different colors, making it versatile and able to match any decorative theme.
Synthetic silk boasts durability and robustness and is particularly familiar in interiors and lampshade design due to its hard-wearing and lasting credentials. Created from fibers such as polyester, and rayon or viscose, faux silk alternatives are often hardier than real silk and can be dyed and woven into a broader range of finishes.
Rayon is a blend of faux silk fibers, often paired with polyester or acetate to increase the softness or firmness and overall fabric luster. We source a high-quality synthetic version of rayon silk called Anna Rayon which is similar to Pongee but created from synthetic threads, which adds to the practicality and durability of our lampshades.
Our variant of supreme satin features a unique, stretchy quality, which allows us to mold this luxe fabric around a variety of shade shapes. Satin as a variant of silk is a luxurious material which creates a glossy finish, and our flexible supreme satin provides a durable and bright look to all of our lampshades.
You can find variations of all of these types of both real and artificial fabrics in our silk lampshade collections. Click the links to discover our full selection of both 100% real silk lampshades, and synthetic silk lampshades.
Many of our real silk lampshades will also come with a soft-backed lining, allowing light to naturally emit a warm glow through your lampshade frame when turned on. Explore more of our soft lined lampshades here.

Directional lighting is used to create a certain type of aesthetic in a home. It can be used to enhance the appearance of a room or to shine a light on an object or area to create visual interest.
]]>Directional lighting is used to create a certain type of aesthetic in a home. It can be used to enhance the appearance of a room or to shine a light on an object or area to create visual interest. Although it is not the most popular lighting style that there is, it is still something that many customers request because they like how it quickly changes the look of their homes.
The way you choose to use directional lighting can significantly alter the appearance of a space. Below, you’ll find suggestions on how to make the most out of the lamps you’ve chosen to buy for your home. You’ll find a variety of solutions to meet your needs and desired look for the space you put the lamps in.
Ways to Use Directional Lighting
There are many ways to use directional lighting inside a property. One option is to create visual effects by pointing a lamp in one direction such as upward toward the ceiling. It gives the appearance that a room is taller than it really is. Keep in mind that the sizing of other items around the lamp is key in pulling off the visual effect because you don’t want other objects to be dwarfed by an enormous lamp.
Another option is to mix style and function. If you need a lamp that has a good reach to it, a wall-mounted object with the extendable arm is ideal. It allows you to change the position of the lighting so it best suits you.
An example of this style of lamp is often used in bedrooms as reading lamps. You’ll even see it in some hotels. If being able to position the lamp so that the light enhances your reading experience is ideal, you’ll love the idea of directional lighting.
It’s also a fantastic way to highlight an object that you love and want others to see or appreciate. Think art museum lighting and how it’s pointed at sculptures. You can’t get the whole aesthetic of a piece if you don’t know what it looks like in the light. If you have a family heirloom that deserves recognition, this is one of the ways to give it the love it requires.
If you want the lighting to be subtler, you can choose lamps that blend into the rest of the décor you’ve chosen for a space. Select colors that are lighter shades of the main color you’ve painted the walls. You can easily get them to become part of the décor versus standout pieces with high contrast.
Dimmers and Spotlights Give You Greater Control Over the Aesthetic of a Space
Choose the right style of lamp to meet your needs. If you decide that directional lighting is the way to go, you’ll find that using dimmers or spotlights can significantly alter the appearance of a space. If you’d rather stick to traditional lamps and lampshades, you’ll find the selection large, varied, and interesting. There is something for everyone at Lamp Shade Solution!
